Coursework: Preliminary exercise 2023

 1) Choose at least three TV dramas similar to your concept and watch at least one scene from each. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing, sound and mise-en-scene.

  • Fashioned for Deception: Camerawork used many shots to build tension such as, long takes, low angle shots and over the shoulder shots to provide the viewers a feeling of closeness and viewpoint. Also in this context the of mise en-scene in Fashioned for Deception would be clothing as it is a fashion based crime drama meaning it thje clips unveiled the lies and fabrication inhere the fashion industry which relates back to mise en-scene. They also use a lot of montage editing to really build up the tension and to highlight and show what the other main characters are getting up to while the protagonist is doing something important to show a range emotions.

  • Stitching Scandals: The editing in this extract included jump cuts, rapid cutting and cross cutting to keeps the audience interested by displaying several scenes at once. There are also again alot of jump cuts to show the different emotions between the characters to see the impact the the hidden secret that was embed in the story line.

  • Couture Chronicles: Mise en scene used in this extract included a range of lighting, different clothing & costume and props and objects to reveal character traits, provide clues, and add depth to the story and plot of the extract. Low key lighting was a main impact in the extract of this as it created an eerie vibe that the audience were waiting to uncover from the very start of the extract.

2) Write a script for your TV drama scene. You'll find guidance for writing a script in the BBC Writers' Room (click on the Script Library to read real examples of professional TV scripts). Lay it out like a real script (see right) - it will add a level of professionalism to your production.

3) Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing. These additional shots are often close-ups, cutaways, alternative angles or similar. I advise using a simple table on Microsoft Word to set out your shot list - you can find an example here

4) Plan your mise-en-scene: what iconography are you including to ensure your audience understands the genre? Plan your cast, costume, make-up, props, lighting and setting. For this preliminary task, use just one location to keep it simple.

Cast:Ethan as Ant Russio Diaz & Enzo as the masked killer and ill be on the camera. I will also be directing the whole shoot and be editing it on Sony Vegas and Adobe After effects.

Costume: Clothing from @estero.xyz & Balaclava for masked Killer. The mohair collection would be quite covered as i dont want to reveal the secret the collection comes with, that somebody would kill for meandering i would use an abundance of low key lighting to leave viewers wondering what is so important about the mohair collection.

Make-up: NO MAKEUP

Props: Mohair sweater, camera for media day, shipping printer, packaging & more to really create a sense of what its like to get ready for a world changing drop and to give the audience a perspective of how Ant Russio Diaz lives and operates in order for the audience to create some sort of bond or connection with the character.

Lighting: low key lightning when the two come in contact with eachother. and will showing the collection to make sure the true uncovered secret about the collection is revealed and to really highlight the importance of the collection.

5) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by the deadline. Include when, where, who is required and what shots you will complete at each time/location.

When: Tuesday 24th October.
Where: My Office/ Clothing brand shipping storage unit.
People: Ethan & Enzo
Time: 2pm - 4:30pm
