Film Industry: BBFC film regulation

 1) Research the BBFC in more detail: what is the institution responsible for? How is it funded? What link does it have to government? This history of the BBFC page may help.

The UK's film and video industry is governed by the BBFC, which assigns age ratings like U, PG, and 12A. They are designated body with the authority to rate, occasionally edit, and occasionally even reject works.

2) Read this BBFC guide to how films are rated. Summarise the process in 50 words.

Classification is the rating of assigning age ratings and content to movies and other audio content in order to assist kids and families in selecting content and avoiding inappropriate stuff. There Compliance Officers base their recommendations on the BBFC's published Guidelines. These came about as a result of in-depth study, the BBFC's more than 100 years of experience, and significant collaboration with people all throughout the UK. They are frequently updated and represent public opinion on the regulation of movies, DVDs, Blu-rays, and video on demand.

3) Read this BBFC section on landmark decisions. Why did The Dark Knight generate a large amount of media coverage regarding its certificate? Do you agree with the 12A certificate The Dark Knight was awarded?

Despite its severe violence and mature themes, The Dark Knight was given a 12A rating by the Motion Picture Association of America, which attracted a lot of media attention. This rating spoke about the amount of violence that to be permitted in movies as well as concerns about the reliability and efficacy of the MPAA's rating system. While some reviewers thought the movie should have been awarded a r certificate because of the context of the plot and how the violence was portrayed, others thought the 12A rating was suitable. The Dark Knight became one of the most talked-about movies. which attracted a lot of media attention.

4) What are the guidelines for a 12A certificate - Blinded By The Light's cinema certificate (it was rated 12 for its home video release)?

Scenes of moderate violence are acceptable as long as they are not very frequent, persistent, or likely to inspire imitation in young viewers. Strong language is permitted when used sparingly, provided that it is not employed in a way that could offend. Mild sexual allusions are acceptable as long as they aren't too frequent or explicit and are unlikely to be copied by young children. Brief nakedness is OK as long as it's not done to make the viewers feel sexually aroused. Drug usage and alcohol consumption are both acceptable as long as they are neither glorified or encouraged in the depictions of substance abuse.

5) The BBFC website offers an explanation of every classification it makes and detailed case studies on selected titles. Look at the rating for Blinded By The Light and explain why it was given a 12A certificate for cinema release.

The British Board of Film Classification assigned the movie Blinded by the Light a 12A rating because it contained material that was suitable for children 12 and older but might not be suitable for younger children. Due to the movie's focus on family, friendship, and self-discovery as well as its moderate drug and alcohol references and language, the BBFC assigned it a 12A rating.
