 1) What is serial television drama? Write your own definition.

Serial television drama have narratives which gets resolved in different parts and is set over a period of time.

2) List five of the TV dramas discussed in the history of the genre on page 1 of the factsheet. How has the genre evolved over time?

4) Why is setting so important for TV drama?

By substituting one typical character with another, the drama can continue to grow despite the cast members' on-and-off turnover. Introducing fresh characters keeps the show from becoming monotonous. Even serialised dramas like Lost are characterised by their setting, and as the series progresses, new people are introduced while others are eliminated.

5) How do TV dramas typically use character? What audience pleasures can be linked to character in TV drama? (Hint: Uses & Gratifications theory!)

To represent the audiences, they develop characters. Blumer and Katz: This can be analysed in terms of Uses and Gratification, as well as personal identity and interpersonal interactions. When characters represent their audience, the audience can then identify with and recognise themselves in those characters. For instance, when watching a play about students' lives at a school, an audience of school students can recognise themselves in the characters. Also, we form bonds and relationships with these individuals, and we are constantly curious about what happens to them throughout the plot; for example, you might feel sad if a character passes away.

6) What is a multi-strand narrative? Give an example of a TV drama that features a multi-strand narrative.

Cross storytelling is well suited to television serial drama. In addition to any serial beats, medical dramas like Casualty frequently have two or more plots going concurrently. Downton Abbey, a heavily serialised drama, serves its enormous cast of people by telling several tales in the course of one episode and developing these stories over the course of an entire season.

Because they are not subject to the same restrictions, drama serials on pay-cable channels like HBO, AMC, and Showtime can contain a lot more mature and difficult material.

12) How might the TV drama genre evolve in future?

As audiences consume content in different ways, serial dramas may become more diverse and targeted to a niche audience.
