Music Video: Postcolonial theory

 Postcolonial theory: blog tasks

1) What are the visual cues the article lists as linked to the western genre?

Rhinestones and Cowboy hats.

2) How did the Yeehaw agenda come about?

established an Instagram account that and content and documentation of black cowboy aesthetics in popular culture.

3) Why has it been suggested that the black cowboy has been 'erased from American culture'?

The majority of the imagery associated with Americana has been white, to the point where the Studio Museum in Harlem even held a Black Cowboy exhibition two years ago with photographs by Kahlil Joseph, Deanna Lawson, and Chandra McCormick to highlight the black cowboy as a prominent figure in western history.

4) How has the black cowboy aesthetic been reflected by the fashion industry?

Black cowboy history has been preserved by the Compton Cowboys, who even started selling merchandise. The two organisations have teamed up with Pyer Moss, a company known for its western-inspired.

5) Read the section on Lil Nas X and Old Town Road. What does it suggest about race and the country music community?

The Internet erupted when Billboard removed the song, claiming that it didn't incorporate enough aspects of contemporary country music to be classified as belonging to the genre.

6) What elements of the song and music video are suggested to be authentically country and western?

The banjo, the background, the singer's southern twang, and the like twang from the other musicians' voices all perfectly complemented the country music style.

7) What genres of music does the article suggest have been shaped by black influences?

Rock and roll & Country music.

8) In your opinion, what do you think has been the driving force behind the Yeehaw movement?

In my view, the Yeehaw movement was formed to celebrate and inform people about the Black past that is unspoken about in response to movements like Black Lives Matter, racial discrimination, and injustice to black people.

Applying postcolonial theory to Old Town Road

1) How does the Old Town Road music video both reinforce and challenge black stereotypes in the media?

the fact that black cowboys are not fairly represented in the media.

2) How could you argue that the Old Town Road video challenges Gilroy's theory of double consciousness?

Nas confronts double consciousness by creating his own self-identity and self-representation rather than being confused between two cultures and producing country music with his unique hip-hop blend.

3) How does Lil Nas X and Old Town Road provide an example of Hall's theory of race representations? Alternatively, you could argue against this if you prefer.

Because of the fact that he is Black, his song's entry into the country charts is also unusual. Despite the contribution that Black people have made to country music, White men predominate the country charts.

4) Are there any examples of Alvarado's theory of black stereotypes in the Old Town Road video? Why/why not?

The music video's humour is provided by Chris Rock. These are widespread prejudices about Black people, and using them would help an audience understand the story much more quickly.

5) How does Lil Nas X provide a compelling case study for bell hooks's theory of intersectionality?

Today's black Americans are portrayed as pursuing the American Dream. Lil Nas X is admired by all of the white line dancers.
